Optical design & Metrology
Optical system development from concept to qualification. The two main fields are space optical systems and optical metrology. The lab has a secular activity in the design, development, integration and calibration of space optical systems as well as for astronomy than for earth observation purposes.
M
etrology is a key activity for all what concerns optical payload testing. Since the 70's, CSL develops Optical Ground System Equipment’s (OGSE) for testing scientific payloads operating from the X-rays until the sub-mm wavelengths. To provide efficient and up-to-date technology, the group develops new instruments and new metrology methods to face upcoming demands. The knowhow and expertise acquired on these developments are now use for in-flight metrology to on-ground industrial metrology support.
The lab provides also support to solve optical problems by R&D activities or by translating industrial problems into optical solutions.
In a nutshell, the "Optical design and metrology" lab covers the following activities:
- Development of Optical Ground Support Equipment
- Development of new metrology tools
- Development of flight metrology instrumentation
- Support to industry in metrology problems
- Perform optical design and analysis
Several labs are available and dedicated for different purposes as WFE measurement, optical tables for the development of optical experiments, optical tables in a class 100 for OGSE and payload integration.

The lab has developed several facilities available for costumers
- One BRDF bench in class 100 (lien vers Development of a BRDF Measurement Bench for Characterisation of Diffuse Reflective Materials)
- One stray light facility in class 100 (lien vers Stray light testing of the PROBA V payload)
- One EUV imaging system in class 100 (lien vers VUV Optical Ground System Equipment and its application to the ICON FUV flight grating characterization and selection)
- One end to end Earth Observation calibration facility
Optical design & simulation
- The optical designers use commercial S/W as CODE V, ASAP, FRED, IDL, Intelliwave to solve any type of optical problem, from small to extremely large optics from geometrical to wave optics
