CSL engineers are specialists in mechanism design, mainly for optical systems. This includes protective covers, in-flight calibration systems for Earth observation instruments, flip mirrors, scan mirrors and grating positioning mechanisms. CSL masters all aspects of mechanisms design and verification for space hardware according ECSS-E-ST-33-01C, from modelling to qualification.

Mechanism Design

ith the support of the electronic laboratory, the control electronics can also be designed, either for on-ground operations and tests but also for flight operations (flight mechanism control electronic). CSL experience in optics and cleanliness is also important when designing these optical mechanisms. CSL is able to propose solutions optimised for straylight reduction and optical alignment and meeting stringent cleanliness requirements. CSL engineers are also experienced in mechanisms design in cryogenic environment as for example the PACS grating mechanism launched and operated at about -269°C. CSL also conducts micro-vibration measurements through a high-performance  measurement table.
