FOCAL 5 (acronym of Facility for Optical Calibration At Liège) is a cylindrical stainless steel vessel of 120m3 with an horizontal axis and a diameter of 5m. Its length is 7 m.

Characteristics

Access flanges in the chamber

For light beam access, thermal fluid transfer and electrical supply, 47 flanges (mainly of 350 mm of diameter) are distributed over the whole chamber surface.

Focal 5 optical bench

An optical bench is installed in the vacuum chamber. This bench is in stainless steel and has a flatness of 10-5 m/m. It is supported by 6 feet passing through the wall of the vessel and is insulated from mechanical vibrations by bellows, which also ensure vacuum tightness.

These feet stand on a seismic block. The seismic block is larger than the vacuum chamber (length: 15m) allowing to put the OGSE outside chamber. The microvibration level is 100µg RMS in the 0-400 Hz bandwidth without specimen active system.

The optical bench sizes are 6.8m by 1.8m. A threaded holes network (M10 separated of 300 mm) is foreseen on the upper surface.

The optical bench can be moved out of the chamber by means of a railway system.

Pumping system

The pumping cycle is divided into 3 steps:

  • dry primary pumping
  • dry turbomolecular pumping
  • dry interseal pumping

This pumping system is designed to reach 5.10-3 Pa after 5 hours of pumping (this value is given for a chamber without any equipment).

Crane

Focal 5 is equipped with a 1.5 T crane. The crane displacement is following the chamber axis and can be moved outside the chamber (2m with respect the optical border).

The translation speed is 13.3 m/min but can be reduced at 3.4 m/min and the vertical speed is 5.2 m/min but can be reduced at 0.5 m/min.

Platform

PIC00008s

A platform of about 3m by 3m is located upper Focal5 and allow to put any equipment on it.

Thermal system

Different thermal environment inside the chamber can be simulated by means of dedicated shrouds, fed with nitrogen and/or helium.

  • NITROGEN thermal system :

IMG 2308s

10 independent thermal channels allow to feed dedicated panels. The temperatures can be set in the range from 123 [K] to 353 [K] for the regulation system or 85 [K] for the liquid nitrogen system (each line is equipped with a valve which selects GN2 or LN2 mode).

It is possible to reach higher temperature than 353 [K] with additional heaters glued on the specimen or with infrared lamps installed inside the thermal tent.

The thermal regulation system is designed to avoid oscillations and temperature drift.

It warrants performances about +/-0.1 [K] in long term stability and allows complex thermal cycling tests.

Additionally, to these 10 regulated channels, 4 full-liquid/degraded regulated gaseous nitrogen independent channels can also feed dedicated panels.

  • HELIUM thermal system :

The Helium thermal system is composed of lines fed by one of both Helium liquefier/refrigerator (KOCH, model 1630 with a 45 [l/h] capacity or LINDE TCF 20 with a 50 [l/h] capacity) available at CSL. These lines can be fed with gaseous or liquid Helium.

For the cold gaseous Helium lines, the temperature can be controlled from 300 [K] to 4.6 [K]. The total power is 72 [W] at 5 [K] or 200 [W] at 15 [K] or 300 [W] at 18 [K].

It should be noted that the system architecture allows to feed the lines with warm Helium up to 353 [K].

 Nitrogen and helium connection :

The fluid connection for piping is SS-8-VCR Cajon type.

Data Handling

The data acquisition of Focal 5 is organized with  Keithley 2701 data loggers with industrial PC’s.

The current sensor capacity is 320 thermocouples (2 wires) or 160 PT100 (4 wires) but the number can be adapted.

The here below type of sensors are usable and readable:

Thermocouple : T and K type Resistance 4 wires
Diode 4 wires Cryogenic diode
PT100 2 wires Cernox ([Ω] or [K])
PT100 4 wires Thermistor
PT500 2 wires Voltage 0-1 [V] et 0-10 [V]
PT1000 2 wires Current< 100 [mA]
PT2000 4 wires

Some display screens are available in the command room and in the customer areas. Temperatures, gradients, alarms and warnings can be recorded and plotted.

CSL provides various communication means between the data handling system and the customer:

  • The customer can be connected to the Facilities Ethernet network or have a connection to his home base through the public Internet, or through a dedicated ISDN link.
  •  "Teletesting",i.e the real time monitoring and control of an instrument by a customer remote data logger, can also be implemented.

Clean room and cleanliness aspects

The Focal 5 vacuum chamber is located in a class 10 000 (ISO 7) clean room (following US standard:FED-STD-209E).To satisfy specific requirements, a class 100 ( ISO 5) of 360 m3 has been built around Focal 5. An Opening in the roof allows to use the clean room 5T crane.
